On the radar

Auckland Council is asking MetService to install a second rain radar in the Auckland region after councillors discovered the city only has one, located on Mount Tamahunga.

Chief executive officer Phil Wilson confirmed the radar was down recently just before a flooding event hit the St Heliers and Mount Wellington areas.

Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson asked what sort of risk this posed.

“The fact that Auckland only has one rain radar facility in the north and nothing in the south, in a region that’s 140 kilometres long isn’t prudent in my view,” Wilson said.
