Destination Ōrewa Beach is urging local businesses to take responsibility for rubbish bins left on kerbs after collection days.
Destination Ōrewa Beach business association manager Hellen Wilkins says the problem has worsened since the introduction of the new rubbish collection system, with many businesses being issued two bins.
“Many of the buildings, especially those built in the 1980s and 90s, have nowhere to store them, so they are left permanently on the street verge,” Wilkins said.
She said surplus bins are sometimes abandoned or left on the kerb by tenants. Odour also becomes an issue when food is left in the bins, she says.
Hotspots include the block around Bakehouse Lane, especially on Tuesday mornings, and Tamariki Avenue.
“If businesses have surplus bins, they can contact Council to have them removed via the website,” Wilkins says.
“No one wants streets lined with bins, especially when they are dirty. It detracts from nearby businesses and the street environment, so we are asking businesses to help by making an effort.”
