Bam Boo Asian Canteen

Marcha and Greg Cooke.

Greg and Marcha Cooke have always loved the hospitality industry.

Originally from a coastal village just outside Cape Town, they moved to NZ with their two teenage daughters a couple of years ago and settled in Orewa.

They’re the new owners of Bam Boo Asian Canteen on Wharf Street, the only restaurant that overlooks the Mahurangi River – a unique setting for diners that love the fresh, bold flavours of Asian-inspired dining.

A trained chef, Greg has worked in hospitality most of his life, while Marcha is an experienced wine connoisseur who is passionate about supporting the local industry.

From their signature Korean fried chicken and bao buns to pork belly adobo and crispy cauliflower, there’s something for everyone, including gluten free, dairy free, vegan and vegetarian options.
Greg adds, “The menu is all about experiencing flavours, from small plates to large plates.

“We love for people to share their food, relax and enjoy themselves. You get attentive service in a fun and cozy atmosphere.”

During winter Bam Boo hosts a wine and dine evening once a month, Marcha says.

This consists of a tutored tasting by the winemaker, followed by a three-course dinner, which includes a Charlies Gelato dessert. The next one is this month with Omaha Bay Vineyard. Bookings essential.

Bam Boo Asian Canteen is open Wednesday to Monday, midday till late. Closed on Tuesdays.
