Changing places: Hair Illusions

Carleen Parsons

The transformation of Hair Illusions may have appeared to happen overnight – after all, the team closed their old premises Whangaparaoa Rd (in the block by BP) on December 21, and opened the doors of their brand new salon in the New World Whangaparaoa block the very next day.

However, owner Carleen Parsons points out that the move had actually been a year in the planning. She said they outgrew the old salon but were determined to stay on the Coast, so when the site at New World came up it was perfect.

Designing the salon was a job Carleen relished, offering an opportunity to create a stylish, comfortable place to welcome clients with a modern, but not sterile look.

A table in the centre where you can have a coffee and read a magazine before an appointment, and super comfortable chairs, are appreciated by Hair Illusions’ clients.

“Women want to have their hair styled in nice surroundings,” Carleen says.

Carleen has been a hair stylist for 28 years. She says she never wanted to do anything else – it’s a profession that combines her love of fashion (she describes herself as “clothes mad”) with a real enjoyment of people.

“My clients are my extended family,” she says.

Her aim at Hair Illusions is to bring “a bit of Auckland” to the Hibiscus Coast and with this in mind she and her team of three stylists keep a close eye on the latest trends in cuts and colour including regular training with Keune. Keune products are used throughout the salon, which caters for men, teens and children as well as women.

“We are not afraid to do anything, and we have some adventurous requests!”

Full head bleaches and purples are among the trends even for older clients.

“Anything is possible,” Carleen says.
