Changing places: Peninsula Engineering

Nikki McLean and Craig Bowater

After building a solid foundation on Whangaparaoa Peninsula for more than 40 years, Peninsula Engineering is on the move.

However, co-owner Nikki McLean says although she was sorry to leave the site on Whangaparaoa Rd that has been good for the business for many years, the shift to Silverdale offers several advantages.

On April 1, Peninsula Engineering moved into the same premises as the other business that Nikki owns together with her partner Guy Stucke – Multi Engineering.

Nikki and Peninsula Engineering manager Craig Bowater say that sharing premises in Foundry Rd, Silverdale gives them access to superior machinery – and of course provides the opportunity to consult, with the offices all being in one place.

The new location is also closer to the city and to many of Peninsula Engineering’s suppliers.

The business specialises in residential structural steel as well as general engineering, trailer repairs and aluminium and stainless steel fabrications. One of the biggest growth areas in recent times has been structural steel work for homeowners who are renovating their properties to add value.

Peninsula Engineering has built up a loyal clientele and Craig says their customers in Whangaparaoa are glad that they have not moved too far away.

Although residential work is their core trade, over the years Peninsula Engineering has also worked at many local schools as well as for businesses such as McDonalds. They are also on Auckland Council’s preferred supplier list; Council clients have included the Silverdale Animal Shelter, Shakespear and Wenderholm Regional Parks.

One of the founders of the business was Frank Emtage; Nikki and Guy took it over six years ago in the recession and have built it up, settling into a niche and enjoying good relationships with local builders.

“We have a small team and strive to produce good quality work that we are proud of,” Nikki says.
