Council hunts for more properties to sell

After 10 Auckland Council-owned properties were removed from potential sale last month, council staff confirmed they were exploring ways to make up the loss of those sales (to a value estimated at $8 million).

At the Finance and Performance Committee on September 15, members agreed to removed 10 properties from council’s ‘asset recycling’ (sales) programme.

Cr Linda Cooper said at the meeting that $8.36 million would not be realised because of the halted sales.

“There are good reasons why they should be removed,” Cooper said. “But have [Eke Panuku] got other properties they are working on?”

Eke Panuku’s head of strategic asset optimisation, Letitia Edwards, said that there is a lot of work currently underway to find more properties to sell instead.

The 10 properties that were removed from sale were in Waiuku, Howick, Mangere, Otara, Papakura and New Lynn. Each site was assessed individually and the reasons for removing them from sale ranged from significance to mana whenua, recommendations from an independent commissioner to safety issues that could result from sale.
