Discussions between Warkworth Bowls and Warkworth Oaks retirement village over the purchase of part of the bowling club land in Mill Lane are continuing.
Club president John Hurdley says a decision on whether or not to proceed is still some way off. He says the club is waiting to receive a firm offer from Warkworth Oaks.
“The club owns a very valuable piece of land and we are not in the business of giving it away,” he says. “If The Oaks wants it, they will have to make it worthwhile.”
Warkworth Oaks put a preliminary proposal before Warkworth Bowls in March which, if accepted, would see a high-rise apartment building and care facility built on two sides of the club. In return for the land, the Oaks is offering to redevelop the green nearest the road, cover it and redevelop the clubrooms.
Currently the green can accommodate eight rinks, but the club would like to see this extended to 10 so it has some flexibility around what sort of tournaments it can run. (See earlier story MM, March 17)
