Ōrewa locals Deahla and Jarrod McGregor, opened Fin Fish Butchery & Seafood just a short walk from the beachfront in central Ōrewa to fill what they saw as a surprising local gap in their hometown.
The couple have lived in Ōrewa for 10 years and, with long-time friend and business partner Gwithyen Thomas, opened Fin in the Ōrewa Square precinct in December 2025, followed by Fin & Chips next door in June this year.
The trio are long-time friends, with Jarrod and Gwithyen first meeting while training as apprentice chefs. Jarrod spent 20 years working as a chef, while Gwithyen built extensive experience in professional kitchens, owned a restaurant in Los Angeles, then moved into corporate life.
As Deahla and Jarrod’s family grew, the long hours of restaurant life became increasingly difficult so they started looking for a new direction and realised something was lacking in Ōrewa.
“We thought it was absolutely crazy that you couldn’t get beautiful fresh fish in Ōrewa when we’re right next to the beach,” Deahla says.
The butchery specialises in premium New Zealand seafood, whole-fish butchery and ready-to-cook options, with a strong focus on responsible sourcing and traceability.
Jarrod and Gwithyen’s cheffing experience also means they can advise customers on how to prepare and cook different species.
Fin & Chips also has an extensive gluten-free menu, drawing on Gwithyen’s experience of having coeliac disease in his family.
Deahla says the community response has exceeded expectations.
“We didn’t know what to expect but already have so many regulars, and we are so grateful.”
With summer approaching, the team is preparing for a busy first season beside the beach.
