A new boutique coffee roastery and café is bringing a fresh blend of creativity, community and quality coffee to Mangawhai.
Caifewhai, owned and operated by Irish couple Sam and Stu McKeown, recently opened at 31 Moir Street. After more than a decade living in Wellington, the couple are now sharing their passion for quality coffee through small-batch roasting and inventive blends.
After initially testing their coffee at local events, the couple took the opportunity to establish a permanent space where locals can enjoy great coffee and a sense of connection.
“We are both quite creative and love being out and experiencing the community. Coffee has always been something we’ve been passionate about,” Sam says.

That creativity is reflected in the coffee menu, which offers unique twists on the traditional flat white. Popular options include a banana bread latte, buttered toast latte and the popular “coconut cloud.”
Behind the scenes, Stu is focused on sourcing and roasting high-quality beans. The couple import their green coffee beans through a New Zealand supplier with a strong focus on sustainable practices, selecting origins from Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil and further afield.
“We try to pick regions we have an affinity with, but it’s also about the characteristics the beans bring to the final coffee,” Stu says. “Everything is roasted in-house, so the beans are always fresh.”
Caifewhai is open from 6am to 2pm daily, except Wednesdays, with beans available to purchase in-store and via their website at caifewhai.nz
