Introducing: Lush Hair & Makeup

As a mother of two preschoolers and owner of new business Lush Hair and Makeup, Lyndsey Erasmus says she understands the need for hairstyles that can be made to look good in minimal time.

“I keep up with the latest looks, but I’m not all about following trends – the hairstyle has to work for the client, and naturally it has to be easy to manage,” Lyndsey says. “As a working mother I know you don’t have 15 minutes to do your hair – you more likely have five. That’s the reality.”

Lyndsey, who lives in Stanmore Bay, recently bought the business previously known as ID Hair in Silverdale Village. Well-known stylist Ian Gravatt is still on the team.

Lyndsey brings not only her hair cutting skills – she has been in the business for 16 years – but also a talent for special occasion makeup, which she honed at The Makeup School in Ponsonby, Auckland.

She has been doing hair and makeup for weddings and other special occasions, such as Balls, for many years and says she loves seeing the effect that her work has on clients.

“The best buzz is when someone is having a bad day and you can see their spirits lift and confidence grow,” she says. “My motto is ‘it’s all about you’ and that feeling of making people feel good is why I can’t imagine doing any other kind of work.”

She says ombre hair colour is still popular for the coming winter season. “Everyone tends to colour their hair a bit darker in the cooler months, but I’d suggest not going too dark as there are a lot of sombre tones in winter fashion,” she says. “My advice would be to keep it lifted and lightened but look to bring in some warmer tones to suit the season.”

The makeup brand that Lyndsey uses at Lush Hair and Makeup is by Wendy Hill, a New Zealand makeup artist, and she chose it because it is New Zealand made and cruelty-free (not tested on animals).

As well as working at a salon in Albany, Lyndsey also worked from home. She says she loves having her own salon in the heart of Silverdale as a base. “I’ve gone from combining childcare with around 18 hours work a week to working full time and then some. Word of mouth has kept us flat out for weeks and the salon has become like my third child! This is an up and coming area with a lot going on, so it’s an exciting time to be here.”
