Introducing: Noodle Canteen Express

The Caltex service station food court in Wellsford has a new addition.

Noodle Canteen Express has opened in an area off the forecourt, offering locals and travellers authentic Chinese meals, but adapted to Kiwi tastes.

Brand manager Sabrina Ren says that while there are about 60 Noodle canteen stores nationwide, Wellsford is the first Express store.

“This is the perfect location to offer customers a slightly different noodle experience,” she says. “We will be experimenting with different box meals, as well as a range of baoger – taco-shaped Chinese bread which is very popular overseas.

“Boager is basically our word for burger, but it’s healthier and tastier than European-style burgers which is why we want to introduce the same to our Kiwi customers.”

Sabrina says noodles have a lot to recommend them. They are nutritious and filling, quick to prepare either hot or cold, and can be easily transported and stored. Meals can also be served with rice.

“We use fresh ingredients and cook right in front of people. It’s very important to us that our meals are healthy.

“We have kept Noodle Canteen’s all time favourite, Hot Box and Honey Chicken on the list, while the others are more authentic Asian dishes that we want to bring to our NZ customers.”

To the Chinese, noodles symbolise longevity and can be used in festivals and given to mothers or elderly people as gifts on their birthday.

Noodles are more commonly made from wheat flour but can also be created from rice flour or mung bean starch.

The dough for wheat flour-based noodles is typically wheat flour, salt, water, with the addition of eggs or lye depending on the desired texture and taste of the noodles.
