After almost two decades living on the Hibiscus Coast, commercial property lawyer Daniel Kelleher has brought his specialist expertise closer to home with the launch of Kelleher Legal.
Kelleher spent more than 30 years working in large Auckland law firms, with 15 years as a partner, advising organisations such as councils, institutional property owners, the University of Auckland and Bank of New Zealand. His work covered nationwide property portfolios, urban renewal, land development and major infrastructure projects such as the Britomart precinct and the Aotea Square precinct.
Now working independently, he wants to make that experience accessible to Coast businesses, landlords, developers and property owners who may not otherwise consider using a specialist lawyer.
He says the Coast and wider northern region present several areas where specialist commercial property advice can be valuable. These include buying land for residential or commercial development, progressing subdivisions, working through council requirements and expanding a business from one premises into several locations.
His background acting for councils and the Crown also gives him particular expertise in public works, especially advising property and business owners whose land may be required for motorways, roading or other infrastructure projects, drawing on his understanding of how public agencies approach acquisition.
Kelleher sees a need for experienced advice that is practical and affordable for smaller landlords, developers and locally owned businesses. Rather than charging the rates associated with a large city firm, he offers fixed-fee options designed to give clients greater certainty about legal costs.
Kelleher says he does not aim to replace a client’s general lawyer. Instead, he offers focused expertise when a business requires someone with more than three decades’ experience in commercial property.
