Mowing Plus, Hibiscus Coast

Simon Sylvester

Mowing Plus contractor Simon Sylvester says his business philosophy is simple: “Do the best job you can, and the rest will take care of itself”.

And so far, it seems to be working.

“I just finished cutting a hedge in Ōrewa when the neighbour came over and asked if I could pressure clean their drive,” Simon says. “I take pride in a job well done and hope to earn a few dollars in the process.”

Mowing lawns is a far cry from the busy corporate world Simon is used to. A scaffolder by trade, he moved into project management on major commercial construction projects 14 years ago.

“But in the end, I got sick of the corporate world, the pressure and the commute to Auckland,” he says. “I like being outside, so this was a lifestyle change for me.”

As well as lawn mowing, Simon trims hedges, cleans gutters, does house washing and can pressure clean driveways and fences.

He says people seem to be busier post-Covid, so getting these jobs done around the home gives them more free time.

Simon is no stranger to change. He grew-up on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel, but one day 19 years ago, he decided to sell his business, pack up his family and emigrate to the other side of the world, to NZ a place he had never even visited.

He says Guernsey was a great place to spend his childhood and he still keeps in regular contact with school friends who have also settled in NZ.
