Richard Martin – Surgeon

Richard Martin

New Zealand has the highest rate of melanoma and skin cancer in the world and that’s exactly why Professor Richard Martin chose to specialise in it.

“I wanted to work where I could make a real difference,” he says. “I spent two and a half years across the Tasman treating Australians, so I could bring that experience home and help Kiwis.”

Mr Martin also specialises in endocrine surgery for thyroid and parathyroid conditions.

As one of New Zealand’s leading melanoma surgeons and member of the Melanoma New Zealand board, Richard has seen major changes in how people think about sun safety thanks to better education about the dangers of New Zealand’s unique UV environment.

“There has been a dramatic shift in awareness and prevention over the past 10 to 15 years. There has also been a huge increase in the quality and effectiveness of sunscreen.”

When he’s not in theatre, you’ll find Mr Martin heading to his satellite clinics in Ōrewa and Warkworth. He says making care more accessible for patients who find it difficult to travel to see a specialist is essential as it catches potential problems early and ensures patients keep up with their treatments.

A first consultation is about reassurance and clear information, he says, especially as many people are nervous if they suspect they may have skin cancer.

“You’ll not only get world-class care from my team, but also empathy and time to ask questions.”

Outside of work, Richard enjoys family life with his wife, three daughters and two Maine Coon cats. “I’m definitely outnumbered,” he admits. “So I escape to the garden or my Star Wars media room to watch Formula One.”
