Sweet win for bean-to-bar chocolate makers

Mahurangi West chocolate makers David and Janelle Herrick received an early Christmas present last week, picking up seven medals including a gold at the prestigious global Academy of Chocolate Awards in London.

Leading the pack was their new Foundry Chocolate Korosim Microlots, Solomon Islands 70% cocoa bar, which won the sought after Plain Dark Chocolate Bar category.

David Herrick said everything Foundry entered into the awards won something, with four silvers and three bronzes also received.

He said the wins recognised the continued work Foundry was doing to improve its chocolate making and the effort put into developing partnerships with craft cacao bean suppliers from Vanuatu, Peru, Solomon Islands, Uganda, India, Mexico and Vietnam.

The bean-to-bar business moved from the Herricks’ Mahurangi West kitchen to dedicated premises in Silverdale two years ago.
