The Real Food Kitchen

Kyle and Erica Gilstrap

A new chapter has begun for The Real Food Kitchen located in Hillary Square, Ōrewa, with the popular wholefood café now under the ownership of Kyle and Erica Gilstrap.

When the couple saw that café advertised for sale, they knew they couldn’t let it slip away. Living on the Hibiscus Coast since 2019 and long-time supporters of plant-based living, they felt an immediate connection with the café’s ethos of nourishing, wholesome food for everyone, especially the plant-based and gluten-free community.

Kyle and Erica’s vision is to continue what the previous owners began while expanding its reach as a welcoming local hub for good food, creativity and community.

Our goal is simple,” Kyle says. “To keep that spirit of inclusion and care alive at a place where locals can eat well, feel good and connect.”

They are operating the Real Food Kitchen as a social enterprise, with an emphasis on reinvesting its profits into people and promoting projects that bring the community together. This includes supporting local music, creative collaborations and grassroots events that reflect the Coast’s lively, inclusive spirit.

The Gilstraps aim to retain the café’s relaxed and friendly atmosphere while introducing fresh ideas that reflect their passion for healthy, sustainable living. Customers can expect the same focus on quality coffee, smoothies and fresh food, sourced locally alongside initiatives that encourage locals to gather, share and connect.

The Real Food Kitchen will continue to serve breakfast, lunch and coffee daily.

Kyle is also keen to pursue partnerships with other local businesses to make the most of locally produced food and beverages.
