Totara Hill Montessori Preschool

Cindy Buchs

Ensconced in the Matakana countryside not far from the village, the much-loved Totara Hill Montessori Preschool has new owners – husband and wife team Graham and Cindy Buchs, who took over in mid-April.

Both have deep roots in the community; Graham moved to the district as a child, while Cindy is a lifelong local.

All three of their children are part of the Totara Hill Montessori community – one has already graduated, another is currently enrolled and their youngest is set to begin this year.

Cindy first encountered Montessori education during her teacher training and was inspired by its philosophy of fostering independence, curiosity and hands-on learning.

She manages and teaches at Totara Hill, which is the only Montessori preschool in the area, supported by a dedicated team of teachers, most of whom have been on staff for many years, not to mention the former owner.

“I love how Montessori fosters children’s love of learning,” Cindy says.

“We carefully prepare a beautiful environment and guide children to be contributing members of our community. Children are seen as capable beyond their years, and each child is supported to develop holistically to their unique potential.”

The preschool’s peaceful rural setting within native bush complements the Montessori values of peace and respect.

Daily bush walks, gardening and nature-based activities weave environmental respect into the curriculum.

With a waiting list to get in, Cindy intends to uphold Totara Hill Montessori Preschool’s high standards and ensure its nurturing environment continues to thrive for generations of children to come. Cindy is eager to speak with any parents who are interested to learn more about the Montessori philosophy.
