BUDGET ADVISOR NOW AVAILABLE
Thanks to a collaboration between HBC Family Services and the Community House we now have a budget advisor available to assist clients on alternate Friday mornings. Katrina has been working with local families for some time and is keen to meet new people at our main site. If she has no booked appointments she will take casual “drop-in” enquiries. If you would like to make a definite appointment you can ring the friendly team at HBC Family Services.
NEW MEMBER OF BREAKFAST IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME
Stanmore Bay Primary School has joined Whangaparaoa Primary School in delivering our Breakfast in Schools programme. Selected mornings each week children who may have missed breakfast at home (or are still feeling peckish) can tuck in to cereals, fruit, toast and Milo before heading off to lessons. It is planned to establish the scheme in other local schools if there is a need. The Community House is here to support the community. If you would like to join us in this endeavour please contact us.
WHANGAPARAOA SAFE HOUSE
Another collaboration has seen the safe house previously run by Age Concern saved from closure. In the days of Rodney District Council this house was provided rent free for families needing emergency, short term accommodation. With the change to Auckland Council this arrangement was terminated and it was decided that the property needed to bring in rent to the council’s Property Division. Age Concern was not in a position to continue under those conditions. After several months of negotiations with Local Board member Greg Sayers and Auckland Council Property, the HBC Community House and Shiloh Trust of Whangaparaoa have joined forces to ensure the Safe House will continue to be available to families in crisis. Shiloh Trust will administer the property and HBC Community House will pay the rent from the funds we raise from our services. The house has been renovated and is now ready for furnishing. It is hoped to have the first family in early next month.
