Greens or cookies – lockdown style

Microgreen Superfoods growers Paul Pickering and Jelena Musijenko

Whether your lockdown is indulgent, healthy, or something in between, local small businesses are providing the goods.

Matakatia growers Paul Pickering and Jelena Musijenko have a bumper crop of microgreens (the young seedlings of vegetables and herbs).

Most of their sales are via local markets, so lockdown meant that they have an abundant supply ready to eat.

They have set to work and are now offering boxes of microgreens with free contactless delivery in the local area.

“The local community has responded, which means we’re able to sell our greens rather than compost them,” Paul says.

On the other side of the healthy food coin, Stanmore Bay baker Aidan Watson only launched his cookie making business two weeks ago. It’s an online business, with the cookies shipped directly to customers, so he is able to keep going during Level 4. Aiden is a painter by trade, but says he’s “always loved a good cookie”.

“I find it hard to get a really good cookie now – the commercial ones are too small or dry – so thought I’d start making some big ones that are gooey on the inside,” Aidan says.

His bakes were in demand from the start and friends encouraged him to start selling them. He now operates from a commercial kitchen and hopes demand will build so he can become a full time cookie-maker.
