Police have warned that enforcement action will be “taken where necessary” when it comes to mask use when out in public.
A Police spokesperson says initially, officers are taking an “education-first approach” around the requirement to wear masks at essential services such as supermarkets and pharmacies.
“This means encouraging people to do the right thing for themselves, their loved ones and the community,” the spokesperson says.
Repeated breaches or refusal to comply with Police will result in enforcement, either through infringement notices, arrests and court action if necessary.
Meanwhile, no checkpoints have yet been set up between regional boundaries. Police say this is because the whole country is at Alert Level 4.
Yesterday, Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said Police would have a visible presence in public places.
“People know by now what is required of them. They can expect alert level restrictions to be enforced,” he said.
He said Police would be on the road to ensure that people were travelling for essential purposes.
“Police have been active on the road network, particularly around holiday hotspots, to check people are doing the right thing.”
Police have received 684 complaints from the public about breaches of alert level requirements since an online reporting tool went live on Tuesday.
