Covid-19 alert level settings have taken a toll on the biggest fundraisers of two local schools, both of which had been planned for October 30.
There will be big changes for Dairy Flat School’s Ag Day, which is now likely to be closed to the public.
The event dates from 1938 and this is the first time it has been affected in this way although bad weather did cause a few changes once in the early 1980s.
Principal Katie Cotter says under Level 3 or 2, Ag Day will be modified but go ahead in some form. As well as being open only to students and their immediate family, there will be no stalls and no scarecrows.
The Young Farmers competition and animal judging will be held, but with strict limits on who can be present.
The day’s activities will be recorded for others to view. “Ag Day is about the children, so that will be our focus this year,” Katie says.
Meanwhile, Silverdale School announced to its whanau on October 12 that the decision had been made to cancel its Country Show Day. It was a hard decision to make, but ultimately the right one, Principal Cameron Lockie says.
