Arabia comes to Mahurangi

James Milne aka Lawrence Arabia “has been thinking” about new music.

Award-winning singer-songwriter James Milne – better known by his stage name Lawrence Arabia – is bringing his brand of wry melodic indie pop to Leigh Sawmill Cafe on Sunday, November 16 from 4pm.

It’s been six years since his last album, and Milne admits the time away has been one of reflection.

“Like Richard Prebble before me, I’ve been thinking,” he says.

“It’s time to bring out some of these new thought babies from the writing suite and expose them to the light, let them photosynthesise and become real and alive in the world.”

That’s exactly what Milne will be doing at the Sawmill Cafe, where he’ll perform a mix of new material and old favourites in an intimate solo set, accompanied by guitar and piano – as well as his trademark dry banter.

Since releasing his first two albums in 2006, his self-titled debut album and the debut album from his band The Reduction Agent, the Christchurch-born, Auckland-based artist has collected the APRA Silver Scroll, the Taite Music Prize and two Tui Awards (now the Aotearoa Music Awards).

He’s performed globally, shared the stage with the likes of Lorde and Neil Finn, and written for TV and film – including Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s What We Do in the Shadows.

He’s also co-created a hit psychedelic comedy podcast, and, as Milne puts it, “successfully procreated”.

Now he’s ready to reconnect with Rodney audiences with his clever harmonies, whip-smart lyrics and retro songs that have a modern Kiwi twist. Not to be missed.
