Art fair to boost anti-tip funds

Fair coordinator Sue Hill with Fight the Tip deputy chair Michelle Carmichael outside the old Masonic Hall in Baxter Street, Warkworth.

Landfill opposition group Fight the Tip is holding a two-day art fair this month to raise funds for its long-running court battle against plans to build a huge new dump south of Wellsford.

Event coordinator Sue Hill is seeking contributing artists as well as donors for the fair, which will be held at the old Masonic Hall, next to Warkworth Library, on Saturday and Sunday, November 22 and 23.

“We are calling for wall-hanging artwork, such as paintings, photographs, collages, drawings and prints, as well as 3D work like sculptures, ceramics and carving,” she says.

“The aim is for 50 per cent of the sale price to go to the Fight the Tip campaign, however if artists would like to donate work for sale, that would be fantastic.”

Hill adds that while submitted work doesn’t need to reflect the anti-landfill cause, any pieces that do endorse the environmental sentiment will be more than welcome.

Fight the Tip executive member Michelle Carmichael says the art fair will be a showcase for individual artists, a fundraiser for the group and a reminder that, even though the Environment Court case ended recently, the seven-year fight is far from over yet.

“Money raised will be used to reimburse our legal team and expert witnesses who are currently working pro bono in the Environment Court as we continue to oppose Waste Management’s proposed landfill, and also to enable us participate in any upcoming High Court appeal,” she says.

“Should the landfill go ahead, the precedent it sets is one every person in New Zealand should be concerned about. So, we need everyone’s help.”

Artists should note the historic Masonic Hall walls have two picture rails only – no nails can be used – and hanging hooks will be provided. There will also be some freestanding screens and easels available.

All wall art must be ready to hang with D hooks and secure line or wire, and weigh no more than 10kg.
Artworks need to be delivered to the Masonic Hall on Friday, November 21 between 8am and midday. Easels, plinths and other display items would also be welcome.
