Young photographers and storytellers are being encouraged to explore one of the Mahurangi region’s hidden gems as part of a school holiday competition organised by Mahurangi East Library.
The competition, themed ‘My Visit to Highfield,’ invites children and teenagers to visit Highfield Reserve during the July school holidays, take photographs and submit them along with a short story inspired by their experience.
Located between Snells Beach and Algies Bay, Highfield Reserve offers stunning views across Algies Bay, Snells Beach and Scandrett Regional Park from its lookout points. The reserve is also home to a small herd of donkeys.
The competition is open to four age groups – under five, five to eight years, nine to 12 years, and 13 to 17 years.
Participants can take photographs at Highfield Reserve from July 4 to 20, with entries closing on July 21. All submissions will be displayed in an exhibition at the library from July 23 to August 7. The wider community will have the opportunity to view the entries and vote for their favourite photographs in each age category during the exhibition period. Category winners will be chosen through public voting, while an overall winner will be selected by a judging panel.
A prizegiving ceremony will be held at Mahurangi East Library in August.
Library staff hope the competition will encourage young people to spend time outdoors, discover the natural beauty of Highfield Reserve, and share their experiences through photography and creative writing.
Mahurangi East Library librarian Pip Stocking, who is coordinating the initiative, says the competition offers a fun way for young people to connect with nature while developing their creativity.
