Card collectors convene

Pokemon cards were the most popular item at last year’s convention.

Fans of card games and collectors who enjoy buying and selling memorabilia will be heading to Ruakākā for the Northland Enthusiast Convention on Sunday April 12.

Close to 200 people attended last year’s inaugural event, which showcased all kinds of curious items.

Organiser Antoni Antunovich said he wanted to share his hobby with the community, as similar events such as Hobbycon or The Retro Event were usually held in larger cities such as Auckland or Wellington.

“There will be a wide range of vendors, from trading card game (TCG) sellers offering Pokemon cards to stalls with clothing, Lego, books and NBA cards,” he said. “I was surprised by the level of support from the community last year. We expect the attendance to double this time, as the event will be in the middle of the school holidays.”

Antunovich said that although the event was mainly aimed at children and teenagers, there had also been a lot of interest from adults.

His goal is to frow the convention into a national event.

“It was great to see people getting along and talking about their hobbies and sharing their own stories and interests – it really created a sense of community,” he said. “I was even receiving messages and phone calls days later from people thanking me for organising the event or offering advice for the next one.”

The convention will be held at the Ruakākā Recreation Centre, 3 Peter Snell Rd, from 9.30am to 3pm. Entry is $2 at the door; free for children under 12.
