Ōrewa’s Centrestage Theatre will open its doors to the community on Sunday, February 8, with an open day at its Centreway Road venue.
The event runs from 10am to 3pm and is hosted by the committee of the Centrestage Theatre Company (Ōrewa) Inc.
The open day offers the chance to learn more about the theatre company, what it is like to be involved in a production, and how to get involved for the year ahead. Visitors can sign up on the day to join the company as preparations begin for the new performance season.
Guided tours of the theatre will run throughout the day, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the stage, rehearsal spaces and backstage areas not usually open to the public. Tours are scheduled for 10am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm.
The company’s first show of the year, the musical Tootsie, is currently in rehearsal, and tour groups will be able to see the production in action. The tours will also showcase a selection of costumes created by the theatre over the years, which are available for hire.
At 10.30am, the Centrestage Youth Theatre team will run a young people’s talent quest, with guest judges and prizes. The session provides an opportunity for young people interested in drama to learn more about youth theatre classes and meet the tutors.
At 12.30pm, the Broadway Gals will perform excerpts from shows they have staged over the years in the main auditorium.
At 1.30pm, theatre manager Ross McKellar will lead a play reading and speak about opportunities to take part in play productions and upcoming workshops.
Food will be available on site and family games and activities will run outside on the grass later in the afternoon.
