Choir concerts to seduce audiences

Musical director Jenny Eirena, left, and choir singer Beth Houlbrooke discuss Beth’s solo.

The Matakantata Choir will court audiences with two concerts dedicated to the highs and lows of romantic relationships – on Friday, June 27 at 7.30pm in Matakana Town Hall and Sunday, June 29 at 4pm in the Warkworth Town Hall.

The theme is ‘Break-up, make-up. Love can rock you’.

The choir will certainly be rocking, but also serenading attendees with a set-list of songs handpicked to reflect the rollercoaster ride of breaking up and making up with someone you love. Musical director Jenny Eirena says you have to get the order right.

“The first half of the show is roughly break-up, the second half is make-up. You don’t want to end with breaking up,” she says.

Audiences can expect to hear many hits, some of them total heartbreakers.

Everything from Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart and Chicago’s Hard to Say I’m Sorry, to Yesterday by The Beatles, Toto’s Stop Loving You and Crying in the Rain, composed by Carole King and made famous by A-ha.

“People will probably recognise every single song.”

Eirena says she will be singing Vulnerable by Elle Limebear.

“Because you need a song that shouts out that it’s actually possible to go through really tough times in a relationship and reconcile without having to split up.”

The choir will be accompanied by “the amazing John Wells”, who will also be doing a couple of solo piano pieces.

“If you’re unsure about choir concerts, then this is the one to come to,” Eirena says.
Just remember to bring a box of tissues.
