Crowds flock to annual Santa Parade

More than 30 floats took part in the annual Mangawhai Santa Parade on December 14 with Mangawhai Players claiming first place, Mangawhai Kaiwaka Scout Troop in second and Four Little Birds in third. The town’s streets were awash with tinsel and good cheer, and children took advantage of the hot day to enthusiastically shoot their water pistols at the crowd.

The parade finished at the Mangawhai Activity Zone, where John Phillis and Keri Cullen thanked everyone who had supported the parade, as well as the sponsors for helping to make it possible.

“Congratulations to all the participants – your creativity and spirit made the 7th MAZ Santa Parade and Concert the biggest and best yet,” Phillis said.

An estimated 100 volunteers, local businesses and community groups were involved.

Entertainment started with kapa haka performances followed by rap and hip-hop demonstrations, and other musical numbers. There were also a face-painting and hair-braiding stands, and Santa handed out around 300 presents.

Organisers thanked New World for its sponsorship of prizes.
