Different perspectives on This Land

Don’t fence me in, by Joel Cayford (pictured).

This Land, the new exhibition at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, showcases the work of painter Denis Bourke and photographer Joel Cayford.

Bourke and Cayford regularly exhibit together and, for this exhibition, their works provide different perspectives on the concept of This Land.

Bourke’s works in acrylic paint either on canvas or on specially constructed wood panels, which provide a textured surface. He covers several themes including skyscapes, and was inspired by southern vistas while hiking the Routeburn track.

“These paintings reflect my lifelong passion for the unique and ancient New Zealand land and flora, which have formed me as a person and as an artist” he says.

Cayford uses photography to explore the chemistry of the cabbage tree (ti kouka) and he uses digital filters to make new and, sometimes, unexpected art.

“My creative choices and decisions these days are more about surrealism and the soul than memory and the mind” Cayford says. “At the same time, I continue to be true to the principle that ‘every picture should tell a story’.”

This Land at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery 45 Moir Street Mangawhai is open daily 10.30am to 3.30pm (from 9am on Saturdays), until Thursday November 13.
