Fresh off a sold-out Australian tour and the release of their debut album National Panic, folk and alt-country band Rufous Whistler will play at the Whangateau Hall on Thursday, June 5.
The audience has been told to expect a show that is “both intimate and explosive, and earthy and electrifying, in equal measure”.
The band is led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Vinny Russell, who has brought together two of Australia’s most dynamic acoustic musicians for this debut New Zealand tour – Lucy McKenzie-McHarg (fiddle, mandolin, vocals, guitar) and Dylan Knur (mandolin, fiddle, banjo, vocals).
Hailing from north-east Victoria (Wiradjuri Country), Rufous Whistler has a sound that weaves raw storytelling through rich, harmony-driven arrangements.
National Panic debuted at number two on the ARIA Country Albums chart and was named ABC Country’s Feature Album of the Week. It features breakout singles such as River Gum Tree, Honey, and I Mean It, and offers an unflinching look at collective anxiety, personal unrest and the deep need for connection.
Russell says to get an idea of the band’s sound, “think the haunting precision of I’m With Her, the lyrical grit of Gillian Welch, and the unrelenting drive of Trampled by Turtles”.
The show starts at 7.30pm and entry is $20. To secure tickets, email whangateaufolk@gmail.com
