Free community events mark Waitangi

The Mangawhai community will again gather to celebrate Waitangi Day on Friday, February 6, with a full day of free public events spread across three locations.

The 2026 Mangawhai Waitangi Celebration will include a formal morning welcome at the Mangawhai Museum, on-water activities on the estuary, and an evening concert at the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ), offering something for all ages.

Proceedings will start with a traditional welcome at 9am, followed by short speeches to mark the significance of the day. The museum will also be open with free entry throughout the day, allowing visitors to explore local history as part of the celebrations.

From 10am to 1pm, attention will shift to Lincoln Reserve on the waterfront for a Sailing and Waka Ama Spectacular on the estuary. The event will feature traditional waka ama alongside sailing activities, with members of the public welcome to take part. Participants can bring their own small craft or arrange to use one on loan. Those wishing to register should contact organiser Colin on 021 225 7257.

The celebrations will conclude with a free live entertainment concert at Mangawhai Park, running from 5pm to 7.30pm. The evening programme will showcase a range of performers and local talent, with food options available on site.

Sponsorship invitation

Sponsorship and volunteer support will be essential to delivering the Waitangi event. Funding is required to cover key costs such as health and safety requirements, traffic management, portable toilets, and concert audio, power and infrastructure. Sponsorship opportunities range from a lead sponsor at $3000, or shared gold sponsorships at $1500 each, to supporting sponsorships from $300. Donations of any amount are also welcomed. Sponsors will be promoted through media channels. Organisers encourage local businesses and community members to get involved to help ensure the Waitangi Day celebration continues to be a successful and inclusive event for Mangawhai.  Info: Craig Jepson on 021 412 522.
