There’ll be even more laughs than usual at this year’s Warkworth Toastmasters’ Great Debate, with some of the country’s best comedians lining up to spar with local talent.
Nick Rado, Hoani Hotene, Jeremy Elwood and Lana Walters will all be on stage at Warkworth Town Hall for the Harbour Hospice Tui House fundraiser on Saturday, October 4.
Members and guests of Warkworth Lions and Toastmasters will get the ball rolling at 7pm, debating the motion that ‘participation certificates are the reason no one can back a trailer’.
They will be followed by Muzza’s Team – Toastmaster and One Mahurangi manager Murray Chapman, Warkworth Senior Constable Hamish Buick, and comedian and More FM presenter Nick Rado – up against The Comedians – Hotene, Elwood and Walters – who will argue the toss as to whether old age is a blessing or not.
Relative newcomers Hotene and Walters have each won the renowned Billy T Award for best emerging Kiwi comedian in 2024 and 2025 respectively, while Elwood is a 25-year veteran of the NZ stand-up circuit.
Attempting to keep control throughout the evening will be former owner of Ascension Wines, MC Darryl Soljan.
Organisers are hoping The Great Comedy Debate will make up for a planned comedy gala night that had to be cancelled earlier this year due to insufficient ticket sales. They are urging people to book early, as the debate is always a popular night, even without famous comics appearing.
Tickets cost $40, which includes “amazing finger food” from 6pm, available from Harts Pharmacy, Mahurangi Matters, Tui House and Warkworth Information Centre, or scan the QR code on posters.
