Whangateau Folk Club will host acclaimed folk-rock outfit Bill Angus & The Mighty Ways on Monday August 25, as part of their tour for third album All Night Before the World Began.
Fronted by songwriter Bill Angus and featuring Emily Allen (violin/viola), Maggie Cocco (vocals) and Ritik Singh (percussion), the band has drawn comparisons to Jackson Browne and James Taylor.
The new album has earned praise from a top UK producer for its “beautifully crafted tracks” and “gorgeous strings”, evoking the great 1970s singer-songwriter era.
Angus’s career began in the UK in the 1990s when he was signed to Taste Media, recording at the legendary Sawmills Studio with world-class producers Pat Moran and John Cornfield – Muse even opened for him. After a break from music to move to New Zealand, he released two solo albums and built a following at folk festivals before assembling The Mighty Ways.
Allen’s classical-meets-folk string arrangements are a highlight, her orchestral résumé spanning the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Symphony Orchestra and tours in China.
Cocco brings powerhouse vocals and harmonies. Her operatic training and international stage experience includes backing vocals for Joe Cocker, alongside her own projects Science for Sociopaths and the Maggie Cocco Band.
Newest member Singh adds dynamic rhythmic textures, blending traditional Indian percussion with contemporary influences. A multi-instrumentalist, he performs in both Hindi and English.
Bill Angus & The Mighty Ways will perform at the Whangateau Hall on August 25, starting at 7pm.
