Ocean inspires latest art show

Left: ‘Wave’ by Deva Prim. A painter and concrete mosaic sculptor, Deva’s playful, vibrant works are rooted in her belief that “beauty saves the world”. Right: ‘Near the Edge’ by Robert Looker. A full-time artist who focuses on themes of belonging and landscape, Robert’s piece emerged from a memory, inspired by a day spent walking the cliffs north of Mangawhai Heads.

A fresh batch of stunning local artwork showcasing the rhythm of water, the power of the ocean and the ever-changing seascape, is again on public display at Kaipara District Council’s (KDC) Mangawhai office.

Titled ‘Dawn to Dusk – Ocean-Inspired Works’, the display is the 16th mini exhibition curated by Mangawhai Art Inc since the ongoing series started in 2020. Each exhibit graces KDC’s walls for three months and visitors have until October 23 to view the latest artwork.

‘Ocean Dusk’ by Suzanne Simpson. Fine Arts graduate and children’s book illustrator for nearly 30 years, Suzanne’s oil painting is a glowing tribute to the tranquillity of the setting sun and the grace of a lone female surfer.

Clockwise from left: ‘Dawn’ by Sue Anson. A new artist to the scene, Sue is inspired by the natural world and her work reflects a deep connection to place, colour and mood.

Exhibition coordinator Janél Collé says the work of the four artists – Sue Anson, Suzanne Simpson, Robert Looker and Deva Prim – captures the entrancing moods of the sea, from the first glow before sunrise to the fading light after sunset.

“The ocean’s calm serenity and unpredictable energy are vividly portrayed in the four unique works,” Colle says. “Each painting offers a personal response to the ocean’s allure and emotion, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on nature’s power and beauty”.

‘Dawn to Dusk – Ocean-Inspired Works’ is open to the public during council office hours: Monday to Friday, 9.30am-3pm.
