A film shot on location at Omaha and in Matakana will make its debut on the big screen in Matakana on October 8.
Big Girls Don’t Cry, set in rural New Zealand in summer 2006, is a tender coming-of-age story.
In her breakout performance, the lead character – 14-year-old Sid Bookman – is played by Ani Palmer, while Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones and Almost Famous) plays her father Leo.
Caught between childhood and adolescence, the story follows Sid’s burgeoning sexual curiosity and a desperate desire for acceptance. Her coastal town is quiet and contained, but glimpses of life beyond – flickering reality TV, American pop culture, and the occasional seedy chatroom – ignite both longing and restless possibility.
The film was written and directed by Paloma Schneideman, a former Mahurangi College student, and Big Girls
Don’t Cry was the only NZ film selected in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival held earlier this year.
