Playground officially opened

Celebrating the playground’s official opening were, from left, MAZ member Ian Baker, contractor Fraser Smith, Kaipara councillor Mike Howard, council’s Jenny Rooney, MAZ committee member Ken Rayward, and gold standard sponsors, New World Mangawhai owners Scott and Rachael Henderson. In the tower and ready to test the pole is MAZ committee member John Phillis.

Young playground critics have given the brand-new adventure equipment at their favourite park an excited thumbs up.

Mangawhai Activity Zone’s (MAZ) contemporary playground was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting celebration on April 5.

Featuring towers, tunnels and a sand play platform, as well as slides, climbing ropes and poles, the new wooden design was made possible by the efforts of locals, businesses and Kaipara District Council (KDC).

“To have a playground like this doesn’t happen overnight,” MAZ committee member John Phillis says. “It’s been in the making for some time now, it takes quite a bit of money and a lot of preparation.

“KDC supplied ‘a truckload of money’ through the Reserve Contribution Fund, overseen by community funding officer Jenny Rooney.

“Jenny is an amazing supporter of this park and has been heavily involved in making sure this playground got funded, along with MAZ chair Kate Arbuckle.”

The park also relies on community donations and sponsorship.

“I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to our gold playground sponsors, Rachael and Scott Henderson, owners of that little shop down the road, New World.”

Supporter of many events and businesses, FD Smith owner Fraser Smith, was also recognised for his work in removing the old plastic playground, which has found a new home with Aotearoa Surf School.
