Porch music day strums into Whangaparāoa

Whangaparāoa will join more than 1000 cities worldwide taking part in Play Music on the Porch Day on Saturday, August 30.

The event encourages people to step outside and make music, whether alone or with friends. Participants are invited to share videos on social media with the hashtag #playmusicontheporchday, which showcases performances from over 70 countries.

Community ukulele group Uke Can Do It will perform at Whangaparāoa Library from 3pm as part of the global celebration. The group also meets weekly at The Beer Spot, Whangaparāoa, where members and newcomers enjoy a free “sing and strum along” session each Wednesday at 7pm.

The sessions are open to all, regardless of experience. Lyrics and chords are projected on a large screen, making it easy to join in, even for those who have never picked up a ukulele before. Spare instruments are available to borrow, and the emphasis is on fun and community.

“Play Music on the Porch Day isn’t a performance or a lesson,” organisers say. “It’s about sharing the joy of music together.”
