Rodeo rule changes promoted

Major changes proposed to rodeo animal welfare rules could see some events dropped from competitions across New Zealand.

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) is seeking public feedback on proposed changes to the Code of Welfare for Rodeos, last reviewed in 2014.

NAWAC chair Dr Matthew Stone says the changes aim to reduce injury and distress to cattle and horses. Stone says of particular concern are steer wrestling and rope and tie events, where current practices could breach the Animal Welfare Act.

Under proposed rules, cattle would have to remain standing after being brought to a stop, rather than being pulled to the ground.

Other changes cover animal handling, training, facilities and equipment, while rodeos closed to the public would also be subject to welfare requirements.

Stone says the changes could prompt organisers to withdraw some events.

The rodeo season runs from October to March, with the Warkworth Rodeo held on January 1.

Submissions close on December 9. Details are available at mpigovt.nz/review-of-the-code-of-welfare-for-rodeo-animals.
