Clan Davidson will be the host clan of the 153rd Waipu Highland Games, in Caledonia Park, on December 31.
This year’s programme will include traditional competitions such as solo piping and drumming, highland dancing, tug of war, heavyweight events and children’s races.
The day will start with a street march at 8.30am. The chiefs welcome in the main arena is scheduled for 12.10pm, and the official opening and presentation of the Assynt Quaich award will be at 12.45pm. The award is presented annually and recognises a person who has supported the main ideals of the Waipu Caledonian Society.
Many famous clans are associated with the original settlers who migrated to Waipu from Scotland via Nova Scotia and the games are an opportunity for descendants to catch-up with family and visitors. Many of the Clan Sites at the event will have extensive research material available where visitors can trace their genealogy and heritage.
Entry is $20 per person, with anyone 17 years and under free.
