Show to sink your teeth into

Carnivorous Plant Society returns to Leigh Sawmill Cafe next month.

Leigh Sawmill Cafe will host an imaginative musical adventure when the ever-popular Carnivorous Plant Society (CPS) returns for an all-ages performance on Sunday, February 1, from 4.30pm with free entry for children under 12.

Led by musician and animator Finn Scholes, the multi-media show is designed to engage youngsters and adults, combining live music with animated visuals.

Scholes said the group’s sound was built around movement and collaboration rather than fixed musical structures.

“We create music that feels alive. Our compositions weave together rhythmic ideas drawn from South America, melodic textures inspired by Southeast Asia, and a distinctly cinematic sense of storytelling,” he said.

“The result is music that invites listeners not just to hear, but to journey.”

CPS is known for its ensemble chemistry, developed through years of playing together, where improvisation and composition merge during each performance.

Musical ideas are passed between players in real time and evolve organically ensuring no two shows are ever the same.

Accompanying animations form a central part of the experience, adding a visual layer that mirrors and expands the music.

“The imagery translates abstract musical ideas and can be whimsical, surreal or quietly emotional, creating a space where children can engage through imagination while adults can take time to reflect,” Scholes said.

He added that the late afternoon time slot was designed to be family-friendly, perfect for parents, grandparents and caregivers looking for something special to share with younger listeners.

“It’s an easy and inviting way to introduce kids to live music, imagination and creative storytelling.”

Carnivorous Plant Society’s all-ages gig is at Leigh Sawmill Cafe from 4.30pm. GA tickets are $39 + booking fee from undertheradar.co.nz
