Mangawhai’s biggest summer celebration is set to return on January 2, with the annual Mangawhai Gala Day promising a colourful mix of entertainment, creativity and family fun – all in support of the much-loved Mangawhai Domain.
Held every year for decades, the Gala normally attracts between 5000 and 6000 locals and holidaymakers, making it the domain’s single most important fundraising event.
Mangawhai Domain Society chair Mike McGarry says the day is run by around 100 volunteers, with additional support from local businesses.
He says the event is designed around four key aims – it offers a fun carnival atmosphere, provides opportunities for stallholders and entertainers, showcases the community’s creativity, and raise much-needed funds for the upkeep of the domain.
“With no financial support from local or central government, we rely completely on the efforts of the Domain Management Committee, volunteers and the generosity of attendees,” McGarry says.
Visitors can expect a packed programme, with live bands, amusement rides, market stalls, pony and helicopter rides, plus an array of top-notch food and coffee vendors.
“There’s no specific theme – just good old-fashioned family fun on a public holiday.”
McGarry says funds raised go directly toward operating costs such as insurance, rates, power, grounds and equipment maintenance, and cleaning. Additional grants are applied for when special projects arise, and as a registered charity, every dollar goes back into the community-owned property.
The gala runs from 9am to 2pm on January 2. Entry is $10 per adult, while children under 13 are free. A car-park entry option – $30 for a vehicle and up to five occupants – is also available.
Organisers say they are deeply grateful to the volunteers who give up their public holiday each year.
