Underwater discovery invitation

Residents are being invited to discover a hidden underwater world at Matheson Bay during a special night-time exploration event on Friday, January 30.

Te Kohuroa Rewilding and Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust will guide participants through an evening of discovery around the Matheson Bay awa (stream) and the nearby moana (ocean), showcasing native freshwater and marine species that are rarely seen after dark. The event begins at 6.30pm at the reserve.

The programme offers two guided activities – snorkelling on the rocky reef and a land-based stream walk known as spotlighting. Those taking part will use torches to spot nocturnal creatures and explore the bay’s biodiversity both above and below the water.

Snorkelling is open to confident swimmers aged 12 and over with prior experience, with free hire of wetsuits and snorkelling gear available. Spotlighting stream walks are suitable for tamariki aged five and up, with covered footwear and torches recommended.

Two time slots are available for each activity, with twilight and full night options running from 6.30pm to 9.45pm. Organisers recommend participants try both for the full experience.

The event is run in partnership with Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative and is funded by Auckland Council and Foundation North.
