Waipu rafts ready to race

There will be fun on the water and fierce competition when the annual Waipu River Raft Race is held at the Boat & Fishing Club, off Nova Scotia Drive, on Sunday, February 18.

There will be three separate races – Open and Junior for 4-person rafts, and Individual stand up paddle boards – with cash prizes of $1000, $500 and $200.

The first race sets off at 12 noon, after raft scrutineering and safety briefings at 10.30am. Entry fees are $50 per junior raft, $100 for the open race and $20 for SUPs, and all entries must be registered by noon on Saturday, February 17.

Rules include no polystyrene to be used in a raft, no double-bladed paddles and no dangerous ammunition, including eggs, meat products, hard fruits and “animal by-products”.
