Winter festival shines light on Warkworth

Thousands thronged to the wharf and main street of Warkworth for Festival of Lights events held over two weekends last month.

Organiser Murray Chapman said on the first weekend, the streets were buzzing and the local restaurants “were absolutely slammed”.

However, disaster struck on the second weekend when wet weather and high winds looked to foul plans for the main attraction.

The ice-skating rink could not be assembled in the 20-knot winds for fear it would be blown away with children inside so was moved to the town hall.

Murray says events like the Winter Festival of Lights will be especially important for the town’s survival once the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway opens.
