Call for Tossi volunteers

Takahē are one of many animal species that trappers at Tāwharanui are protecting.

The Tāwharanui Trappers will take a break from setting lines and checking traps when they hold an informal Winter Gathering on Sunday July 12.

Organisers say anyone interested in learning more about the trappers’ work is welcome to attend.

“Our current team will share trapping updates, there will be some quick refreshers on keeping traps in top working condition and time to discuss ideas for improvement,” committee member Jon Monk says.

The Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary Society Inc (Tossi) is looking for more volunteers to help with various tasks relating to animal pest control.

“Many local families and individuals enjoy Tāwharanui, and this is a way to contribute to local conservation efforts.

Whether you volunteer for a half day or a day each month, it all helps and is personally rewarding.”
Monk says the tasks are many and varied.

“If you like getting out in the fresh air and don’t mind dealing with dead critters, then you could help with a trapline. If you enjoy the fresh air but are less keen on dead critters, you could maintain trail cameras (replacing batteries and SD cards) or help to keep traplines accessible. If you aren’t so keen on the outdoors, or you don’t have time available in the daytime, then you could be involved in reviewing SD cards for pest images or doing data entry to TrapNZ.”

Monk adds there is also always a need for people prepared to help with repairing traps and other equipment.

All operations are fully supported by Auckland Council rangers and other Tossi volunteers, with training provided, as needed.

“If anyone is interested, we invite them to come along to the Sunday morning tea, which will be held in the Matakana Community Hall (meeting room at the back), starting at 10am.”
