A planting project aimed at keeping sediment out of Sandspit Harbour will be held next Saturday August 23, and Takatu LandCare is inviting the community to help.
Volunteers have already dug 3000 plants into farmland on the bank above an offshoot of the Matakana River that runs north-east of Tongue Point, and now they want to get the final tranche of 900 natives planted.
The community planting day starts at 9.30am and runs until 12.30pm, after which lunch will be provided. Entry to the site is via 19 Haywood Lane, off Whitmore Road on the Tawharanui Peninsula, where there is limited parking.
A group spokesperson says all are welcome, though with a reasonable walk to the site, the day is not recommended for children under five or anyone with a heart condition.
Anyone attending should wear sturdy boots, bring gardening gloves, water and a snack, and a spade if possible. Car sharing is encouraged and drivers are asked to be considerate when negotiating Haywood Lane, which is narrow and unsealed.
