Estuary rubbish in prize winning photo

Ōrewa College student Carter Wright is new to photography, but his interest in the environment came through, winning him second place in the Photography section of the Young Reporters for the Environment competition (11-14 years division).

The annual competition attracted 146 entries from across the country with young people keen to take a stand on environmental issues through writing, photography or video.

Twelve-year-old Carter took the photo as part of a Year 8 elective, and says it was the first time he’d taken photos of a subject he feels very strongly about.

He went into the mangroves near the school and said it wasn’t difficult to find rubbish to photograph there. His image, called One Too Many, shows a wet wipe on a mangrove branch.

Carter hopes to pursue a career in environmental science.

Young Reporters for the Environment is run in 43 countries. In NZ it is facilitated by Keep NZ Beautiful on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education and the YRE Litter Less Programme.
