The country’s largest clean up event will be held from September 18 to 25. Clean Up Week is organised by Keep NZ Beautiful and involves hundreds of locally focussed events, involving thousands of volunteers.
Last year, a total of 30 tonnes of waste was collected, an equivalent weight to a sperm whale. According to Keep NZ Beautiful, rubbish levels are worsening.
Plastic litter jumped by more than 70 per cent in the last litter survey with plastic the most common material found in public spaces and beaches.
igarette butts remain the most frequently dropped single item. Kiwis generate nearly two kilograms of waste per person every day, which is more than double the global average.
