Shakespear Open Sanctuary keeps pests out that may harm the native animals and birds that thrive within the park, but it takes the hard work of many Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society Inc (SOSSI) volunteers to maintain the integrity of the park. Each week, a pair of SOSSI volunteers walk the length of the protective fence, which runs about 1.2km from Army Bay to Okoromai Bay, to check for any holes or breakages using a checklist. This is essential to prevent incursions by rats, stoats, cats and other pests.
Alison Wesley, who heads up the volunteers, says they currently have about five pairs of volunteers but are looking for several more pairs. The meant pairs would only need to check the fenceline every two months or so, taking about two hours, and training and equipment is provided Anyone interested can contact at alison@onewesley.co.nz
