Invasive seaweed discovered

Exotic Caulerpa can spread on anchors, fishing gear or dive equipment.

A small patch of invasive Caulerpa seaweed has been discovered and treated near the entrance to Whangārei Harbour. The infestation was found by Northland Regional Council (NRC) divers undertaking routine marine surveillance alongside the Department of Conservation. The seaweed has been confirmed as Caulerpa, an invasive species already present in parts of the Bay of Islands. NRC quickly responded by treating the area with a benthic mat and chlorine. Follow-up surveys have not found any additional Caulerpa in the surrounding area, although monitoring will continue. NRC Biosecurity and Biodiversity  working party chair Cr Jack Craw said early detection gives authorities the best chance of preventing the seaweed from spreading. Exotic Caulerpa can spread when fragments are carried on anchors, chains, fishing gear or dive equipment. Anyone who spots suspected Caulerpa should report it to Biosecurity New Zealand on 0800 80 99 66.
